Run Command Shortcuts

The Windows "Run" command is a very useful tool. It allows easy access to valuable functions such as the Registry Editor, the System Configuration Utility, Chkdsk and others. It can also be used as an alternative method of launching programs such as the Windows Calculator or Windows Notepad.

Windows Run Command

The usual way to access the "Run" command is via the Start Menu. However, there are ways to access Run more quickly.

Shortcut 1: Keyboard

Simply press the Windows Key + R to open Run from the keyboard.

Shortcut 2: Quick Launch

  1. Click the "Start" button and locate the "Run" icon in the Start menu.

  2. Click and drag the "Run" icon onto the Quick Launch bar. A single-click shortcut to Run should now be available on Quick Launch.

Shortcut 3: Desktop

  1. Click the "Start" button and locate the "Run" icon in the Start menu.

  2. Click and drag the "Run" icon onto the Windows Desktop. A Run shortcut should now be available on the desktop.
Notes:
The Desktop and Quick Launch shortcuts will have the familiar Run icon and will probably be named "&Run…". To remove the ampersand and ellipsis, right-click the icon, select "Rename" and enter a new name such as "Run Command".

Even if you create one or both shortcuts, the Run command will still be available from the Start menu.
