Make XP Look Like Earlier Windows Versions

Windows XP boasts a distinctive visual style for the display of windows and buttons. The XP visual style does away with the chunky, "squared" look of earlier Windows operating systems by rounding off the corners of buttons and windows. However, if you prefer the visual style of previous Windows operating systems, you can easily configure your XP system to reflect your preference.

Here's how to change the visual style in Windows XP:

  1. Right-click the desktop and click "Properties" to open the "Display Properties" window.

  2. Click the "Appearance" tab.

  3. In the drop down list labelled "Windows and buttons" choose "Windows classic style".

  4. Click "OK" to save the changes and exit the "Display Properties" window.

Display Properties Windows

After a few moments, your computer should display the familiar Windows 9x visual style.

To reverse the change, follow the steps above and choose "Windows XP style" in the drop down list labelled "Windows and buttons".
